SAN DIEGO – A popular Pacific Beach bakery and restaurant was targeted Thursday in a search by federal immigration officials who took into custody workers suspected of being in the country illegally.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents executed a criminal search warrant at The French Gourmet on Turquoise Street near Cass Street at 7:45 a.m. said agency spokeswoman Lauren Mack.

She said the warrant was part of an “ongoing criminal investigation” and that agents expect to be at the eatery for several more hours.

The detainees will be fingerprinted, photographed and processed for deportation, Mack said. People with such humanitarian concerns as health or child care issues may be granted conditional release, Mack said.

She could not say how many people were taken into custody or why the business was targeted.
Family members who need information about those detained can call (619) 557-6011, ext. 444. That number will work only on Thursday.
