Guatemalan sent to prison for ID theft
From Register staff • September 7, 2009
Orange City, Ia. — A Guatemalan man who previously was deported under a different name will spend five years in federal prison for stealing another person's identity to get a meatpacking job in Sioux City.
Authorities said Jose Elias Martin-Martin was arrested June 7 in Orange City after a traffic stop. Sioux County Attorney Coleman McAllister said Martin-Martin was taken to jail for having an invalid driver's license. His identity was discovered after his fingerprints raised a red flag with immigration officials.
Authorities determined that he bought a birth certificate to obtain Social Security and Iowa ID cards to get a job at Golden Crisp, a pork processing plant.
