PHOENIX - Police say a man who was shot and injured Sunday in a Phoenix “shootout” involving police officers may be deported.
It was determined through interviews that Alfonso Hernandez-Martinez had no prior knowledge of the shooting and did not commit any crimes during the incident at El Gran Mercado in Phoenix, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
Thompson said Hernandez-Martinez was released from the hospital Thursday afternoon and put into the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Thompson said he believes Hernandez-Martinez will be deported. Police did not say where he's from.
The third suspect who fled the scene of the shooting Sunday was found Tuesday and interviewed.
Thompson said that suspect is a U.S. citizen.
Buckeye police Officer Rolando Tirado was shot and killed in the Sunday incident during an off-duty security job. He was laid to rest Friday. Read about his funeral service here.
The man who shot and killed Tirado from behind in the gun battle was identified earlier this week as Cesar Tomas Quiroz Leon. He was also shot and killed.
Buckeye police Officer Christopher Paz was working with Tirado at the time and remains in the hospital with gunshot wounds but is expected to survive his injuries.
Meantime, accounts have been set up to help the families of officers Tirado and Paz. Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so at any Wells Fargo Bank under the names Tirado Memorial Fund and Paz Recovery Fund.
