Michigan honors student faces deportation

A Detroit, Michigan teen is facing deportation after spending 13 year of her life in the United States.

Ola Kaso will be put on a plane and sent back to her home country of Albania if her attorney can't get an injunction to temporarily stop the Department of Homeland Security from deporting her.

Kaso came to the United States with her family when she was 5 years old.

Her family brought her to the states legally, but a mistake was made with her immigration processing years ago.

This is ultimately why Kaso is facing deportation.

She checks in with Homeland Security on a regular basis, but last Monday morning she was brought to their office and handcuffed to a chair for seven hours.

"It was immensely humiliating. I'm not a criminal, I've never committed a crime. And its just embarrassing to be handcuffed to a chair for seven hours like an animal," Kaso said.

Her attorney says Homeland Security told Kaso her deportation hearing is underway but that it will take a long time.

Her attorney says he can't stop her from being deported, but he is quickly trying to file an injunction that will allow her to graduate from high school.

A meeting is scheduled for Friday with immigration officials and Kaso's attorney.

This is a possible sign they are will to negotiate on when she is sent back to Albania.

Kaso is scheduled to graduate from Cousino High School in Warren in two months.

The 18-year-old has already been accepted to the University of Michigan's pre-med program.

She wants to become a surgical ecologist.

"I'm someone that really, really wants to make a difference in the world and there's a lot that I feel I can do, but I can't get anywhere without an education," she says.
