COLLINS LANDING — An illegal alien from Guatemala was intercepted Tuesday at U.S. Customs on Wellesley Island when he was found driving a vehicle that had been stolen in New Jersey, according to state police.

A man identifying himself as Alex Medina, 23, Camden, N.J., was arrested on a charge of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, and was committed without bail to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building, Watertown, by Orleans Town Justice H. Lee Gill. He awaits possible grand jury action as well as deportation proceedings with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Police said he was arrested about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday after he attempted to re-enter the United States driving a car reported stolen Monday to the Moorestown, N.J., Township Police Department.

He told police he entered the United States illegally about five years ago at the Mexico-Texas border, the investigator said.
