Eight drivers were cited for being unlicensed and seven vehicles were impounded during a checkpoint conducted Saturday night and early today by the Santa Maria Police Department.
Another motorist was cited for driving on a suspended license, but no DUI arrests resulted, according to police Cpt. Jesse Silva.
The checkpoint was set up in the 1300 block of South Broadway, and ran from 6 p.m. Saturday until 1 this morning.
Of the seven vehicles impounded, six were driven by illegal immigrant, Silva said.
More than 1,700 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, which was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
