GREENFIELD, Calif. -- Federal immigrations enforcement agents made a sweep through Greenfield Thursday morning.
Local law enforcement officials said that at least five vans from ICE were picking up undocumented aliens in Greenfield.
ICE officials said their fugitive operations officers were on the ground trying to find people who had been ordered deported, but failed to leave the country.
Greenfield Police Chief Joe Grebmeier said his office was never made aware of any ICE operations in the area and only found out about the sweep after family members began calling to report the disappearance of loved ones.
"I know ICE was in Greenfield sometime this morning," Grebmeier told the Monterey Herald. "I know they arrested some people. I don't know much else beyond that. I had some very distraught women looking for their husbands."
Grebmeier said that although the sweep was a legal operation, better communication could have helped to avoid some of the panic in the community.
A total of 15 people were arrested in Greenfield on Thursday.
