Police stopped a man for a traffic violation Sunday and learned he was wanted on a deportation warrant.

Freire Marcelo, 31, of 3 Mill Road, East Lyme, was stopped at 10:31 a.m. on Route 1 near Church Lane.

Police learned during a records check Marcelo has an active deportation warrant from the Immigration and Naturalization Service. He was transferred to INS officers.

Police said the warrant was for failing to appear at a deportation hearing. No additional information about the hearing was available Sunday.
