West Delray: 11 men detained in sweep by immigration officials
May 4, 2008
Immigration authorities detained 11 Haitian men in an afternoon sweep Wednesday at the Gleneagles Country Club, west of Delray Beach.
Some employees had deportation orders against them, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Some had worked at the club for as long as eight years, said Gleneagles Country Club General Manager Kraig Spina.
Spina said the club was not aware the men were in the country illegally and their paperwork was accurate. They had Social Security numbers and driver's licenses. Spina said he gave them cash and prepaid phone cards before they were taken away.
