An illegal immigrant led Springfield police on a two-hour manhunt Friday after escaping custody while being turned over to federal immigration officers.
According to Springfield Police spokesman Grant Story, police arrested the man Friday afternoon. A tip had led them to a home where the suspect was staying, and they determined he was wanted by immigration officials.
The arresting officer convened with a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent on the 1400 block of South Campbell Avenue.
"In the process of switching cuffs, he ran," Story said.
That was shortly after 1 p.m. At roughly 3 p.m., the man was back in custody.
Using a police dog to track him, officers found the suspect in the yard of a home on the 1400 block of South Jefferson.
