A Boston-based, multi-millionaire is the latest `good Samaritan` to come to the aid of undocumented workers.
Wall Street Journal reports indicate that Bob Hildreth, who made his millions trading Latin American debt, has put up some US$200,000 to date to help post bail for some 40 undocumented migrants who were recently nabbed in a U.S. Customs Enforcement raid.
Hildreth told the paper he was `infuriated` at the televised images of workers being shipped to Texas and that helping them make bail is `payback.`
The workers – some 361 - were recently arrested when federal agents raided a factory in Massachusetts. The factory produced vests and backpacks for U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. The detainees were shipped to a detention center in Texas and faced deportation unless they could post bail.
`The raid broke families apart,` the 57-year-old told the Journal. `This was extremely un-American.`
The factory raid last March was one of the largest in the nation in recent years. A total of 361 people were arrested. Some were detained on the East Coast, but most were dispatched to Texas, home to particularly tough immigration judges.
Hildreth agreed to help post bail if the migrants or their families would also pitch in some of the bond. – CaribWorldNews.com
