Border Battle Heats Up in Valley Neighborhood
Created: Friday, 21 Mar 2008, 5:06 AM MST
The Border Battle heats up in one valley neighborhood Friday.
After a number of requests by business owners, volunteers and deputies of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department will begin patrolling the area near 32nd Street and Bell Road. That's where a number of home improvement stores and work centers are located.
Sheriff Arpaio says he's received letters from some of the business owners, frustrated with a large number of day laborers who gather there.
People who live nearby are also concerned.
Around 200 volunteers, armed posse members and Immigration Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) trained deputies will begin their patrols Friday at 4:00pm.
Immigrants' advocates say they'll also show up, but with video cameras. They hope to catch any civil rights violations made by law enforcement officials.
